5 Signs Your Garage Door Springs Need Repair

If you’re having trouble opening your garage door, it might be time to check on the springs. They’re one of the essential parts of your garage door.

Garage door springs are meant to last 10,000 cycles – about one opening and closing cycle daily. If yours are older than this, it might be time to consider replacing them.

Loose or Slack Cables

If you notice your garage door cables are loose or slack, the springs could have an issue. This is especially true if your door uses torsion springs.

Torsion springs typically use one or two (depending on the size of your door) tightly wound springs mounted horizontally on a steel shaft with cable drums at each end.

The cables run through a system of pulleys and drums that apply tension to your garage door when it opens. They also transfer energy from the springs to the door.

Squeaky Noises

If you notice a squeaking sound in your garage door, there is a good chance that reputable companies such as Rainer Garage Door need to replace the springs. The springs help lift and lower the door, which can become worn out over time or break due to rust or corrosion.

It is best to call a garage door professional to replace the springs, as they are critical components of your system.

If the squeaking continues after you have lubricated the springs, it is a sign that the squeaking is coming from another part of your garage door. It is also essential to check for loose nuts and bolts, which can rattle your garage door’s metal and cause the squeaking.

The Door Won’t Open

If your door does not open or close, replacing your springs with garage door spring repairs may be time. These essential parts are stressed during daily use and can eventually break down.

A good rule of thumb is to replace your garage door springs once every seven years. It would help if you also considered using a silicone-based lubricant on the springs to prolong their lifespan.

In addition, the springs must be able to support the weight of your garage door. If your springs are too weak, they can break and cause severe injury or damage to the door or opener.

The Door Is Heavy

If your garage door is too heavy to lift, there could be a problem with the springs. These are connected from end to end and must be tightly wound to ensure that the door raises evenly as it travels down and up.

If this is the case, try adjusting the tension in the springs. To do this, you’ll need a winding bar that fits onto the end of each spring.

You’ll want to climb up on a ladder beside the winding cone at the end of each spring and insert the winding bar. Then, loosen the set screw to allow it to twist the spring about a quarter turn tighter. Repeat the process until you’re satisfied with the fit of the bar.

The Door Is Uneven

If your garage door is uneven, it can indicate that your springs need to be repaired. This is because springs are designed to balance the weight of a garage door so that it can open and close properly.

This is important because it prevents the door from opening too fast or closing too slowly, which can cause damage to your door and your family or pets.

If you notice your garage door is uneven, it’s a good idea to rebalance the springs right away. This will help ensure your garage door stays safe and functional for many years.
